Backplate & Wing - The Pros & Cons

dive helmets

The backplate and wing are two separable components of a scuba harness. Each part is attached to a buoyancy compensater that creates neutral buoyancy underwater, and positive buoyancy above the surface. Backplate is modular and can be taken apart from the wing. These are great options for divers who aren't certain which type they should get. These are the pros & cons of each.

Stainless steel

With or without a helmet, the stainless steel backplate and wings can be made from either stainless steel. Backplate and wings made from 316 stainless-steel are highly resistant to saltwater. It is cut on a CNC cutter and polished manually to prevent sharp edges which can prematurely wear the strap. They can also be used in conjunction with single-air-tank or dual air-tank systems. For easier storage, the wings and backplate can be removed from stainless steel.

Stainless steel backplates are heavier than aluminium. Stainless steel backupplates are perfect for colder environments, as they'll help reduce the weight of your diving gear. Stainless steel backplates, unlike lead pieces, can be easily adjusted to fit most diving tanks. A Halcyon Dealer can provide weighting advice to determine what's appropriate for your body weight. This backplate is also more durable, so it doesn't require as frequent replacement.

Plastic

The buoyancy of the plastic backplate and wing is not good, but it is still beneficial when replacing the weight on your weightbelt. Jacket BCDs have pockets and weight integration. However, the backplate and wing system does not have any of these ancillary features. These components are available separately. We will be discussing the pros and cons for each. It is vital to select the right backplate for your needs.

Softpack harness

There are many kinds of harnesses, both for wings or backplate. Backplates and wing-specific BCDs are the most popular. They include all of the essential components, such as a harness, backplate, and wing, and allow the user to customize the harness with a range of adjustable features. Softpack BCDs make technical divers' lives easier. They are lightweight and flexible and do not attach to rigid plates.

Steel backplate harnesses lack adaptability. The harness cannot be used with single tanks. It's only designed for use with double tanks that have permanent bands. The steel harness is the most rigid option but is clumsy to use when traveling. The steel harness is only compatible with double tanks. Additionally, the steel backplate may not be suitable for use on land. This can be modified to work with single tanks using adapters but it is not recommended.
