What is an Aqua Lung, you ask?

What is an Aqua-Lung? In its most basic form, an Aqua-Lung can be described as a self-contained, open circuit breathing apparatus. Aqua-Lungs were one of the first types of self-contained breathing apparatus, and quickly gained popularity and commercial success worldwide. This type of equipment is often called a demand valve, twin-hose diving regulator, or simply a diving regulator. Aqua-lungs were invented by Emile Gagnan (Jacques Cousteau) and quickly became a popular part of the diving industry.

Jacques Cousteau

Jacques Cousteau, in the 1940s, created the first underwater breathing apparatus that was self-contained and open-circuit. Cousteau was inspired by a demand-valve system that provided compressed oxygen to divers when they breathe underwater. The Aqua-Lung is the name of the device that opened the sport to everyone who had an interest. The Aqua-Lung was the standard for divers all over the world, thanks to Cousteau.

Emile Gagnan

Emile Ggnanan and Jacques-Yves Cousteau invented the Aqualung in the 1940s. The Aqua Lung's unique design is a result of the designs of earlier diving helmets from the 19th century. It allows underwater divers to inhale through a mouthpiece that releases compressed gas activated from their breath. Gagnan developed the regulator valve for the device. It automatically delivers compressed air to diver's mouthpiece according to diver's breath. This device was revolutionary in the diving industry. It allowed people to explore deep ocean depths for scientific observations, military use, or recreational purposes.

The first open-circuit demand controller

The Aqua-Lung was developed by Cousteau in 1944. It was patented in 1946. Since then, the Aqua-Lung is a very popular scuba regulator. Gagnan, Cousteau’s father-in law, and Emile Gagnan his French colleague were also part the team. They all knew Cousteau and decided to collaborate on the Aqua-Lung regulator.
