PADI stands as Professional Association of Diving Instructors. This is the largest organization devoted to scuba dive training. John Cronin was a U.S. dive equipment salesman, and it was established by two Illinois friends 50 years back. It was founded by John Cronin, a scuba equipment salesman from the United States, and Ralph Erickson. Erickson is a former water polo coach, champion swimmer and lifeguard. Both men expressed concern about the state and quality of scuba diving instruction. They wanted to improve it.

PADI's initial meetings were held at Morton Grove and Niles in Illinois. Cronin later refinished part of his basement to become the headquarters for the company. He also hired a neighbor to work as a part-time secretary and his son Brian to stuff envelopes. As the organization grew, the founders realised the need for an educational course structure and started offering specialty diver courses. The organization had 400 members by the late 1960s.
